Symbolically, caves are spaces for conversion and the climax of a spiritual quest. Entering such caves are said to have the quality of introversion, incubation, regression to the source, psychic withdrawal, and hibernation. Representing a place where the self and ego come to unite, the “Cave of Confrontation” depicts two figures at a state of opposition. The sheltering yet dangerous nature of caves are analogous to the dark uneasy areas of oneself we avoid to explore. Bats surround these creatures as an indication of consciousness and insanity. As bats are active at night, the implication of an inversion of normality suggests that its emergence from the cave is a sign of rebirth. These individuals representing the duality of egos within oneself are forced to face the stored censored memories, instincts, and all those feelings that can hardly leave out the light.
